Heraklion Cruise Port Taxi Guide

Heraklion is one of the busiest cruise ports in the eastern Mediterranean, and for good reason — it puts you within easy reach of ancient ruins, a vibrant old town, and some of the best beaches in Crete. The question most cruise passengers face is simple: what can I actually do with the limited time I have?

The answer depends on whether your ship gives you 4 hours or 8. Here is how to make the most of every option.

Where the Cruise Port Is Located

Heraklion's cruise port is right in the center of the city. The main dock is next to the old Venetian harbor and the Koules Fortress — you can literally see the old town walls from the ship. This is a huge advantage compared to many cruise ports that are located far from the action.

From the port gate, the old town is a 5 to 10 minute walk. The Heraklion Archaeological Museum is about 15 minutes on foot. If you want to go further — to Knossos, a beach, or out of the city — a taxi from the port takes just a couple of minutes to arrange.

What To Do With 4 to 6 Hours

Most cruise ships dock in Heraklion for 6 to 8 hours, but by the time you clear the ship and account for getting back early, your real window is often closer to 4 to 6 hours. Here are three solid options:

Option A: Knossos + Archaeological Museum (3 to 4 hours)

This is the classic Heraklion excursion, and it is classic for a reason. The Palace of Knossos is the most important Minoan site in Europe — a 3,500-year-old labyrinth that was the center of an advanced civilization long before classical Greece. It is located just 5 km south of the port, about 10 minutes by taxi.

Plan to spend about 1.5 hours at Knossos walking through the ruins. Then head to the Heraklion Archaeological Museum in the city center, which houses the treasures found at the site — including the famous bull-leaping fresco and the Phaistos Disc. Allow about 1 hour for the museum.

Total time: 3 to 4 hours including travel.

Option B: Old Town Walk + Shopping (2 to 3 hours)

If you prefer to stay on foot, Heraklion's old town is full of character. Start at the Venetian Harbor and the Koules Fortress, walk up 25 Avgoustou street past Venetian-era buildings, visit the Morosini Fountain (the Lions) in the main square, and wander through the narrow market street — 1866 Street — where vendors sell olive oil, herbs, honey, and Cretan raki.

Stop for a taste of local Cretan food at one of the tavernas near the fountain square. A bougatsa (custard pastry) from one of the old bakeries is the perfect quick snack.

Total time: 2 to 3 hours at a relaxed pace.

Option C: Beach at Ammoudara (2 hours)

If it is summer and you would rather swim than sightsee, Ammoudara Beach is only 7 km from the port. Your taxi can have you on the sand in 10 minutes. It is a long, organized Blue Flag beach with sunbeds, umbrellas, and tavernas right on the water. Swim, relax, and be back at the port in plenty of time.

Total time: 2 hours including travel and swimming.

What To Do With 8+ Hours

If your ship gives you a full day, you have time to combine activities or venture further afield. Two excellent options:

  • Knossos + Old Town + Beach: Visit Knossos in the morning, explore the old town and have lunch, then finish with a couple of hours at Ammoudara or Agia Pelagia beach before heading back to the port.
  • Hersonissos or Agios Nikolaos day trip: With a private taxi, you can drive east along the coast to the resort town of Hersonissos (30 min) or the beautiful lakeside town of Agios Nikolaos (55 min). Both make wonderful half-day excursions with time for lunch and swimming.

Why a Private Taxi Beats a Ship Excursion

Cruise ship excursions are convenient but have significant drawbacks: they are expensive, they move at the pace of the slowest person in the group, and you have no control over the itinerary. You spend time waiting for the bus to fill up, listening to a scripted tour at each stop, and rushing through places you want to linger.

A private taxi gives you a completely different experience. Your driver meets you at the port, takes you exactly where you want to go, waits while you explore, and brings you back with time to spare. You set the pace. You choose the stops. And the price is usually less than what the cruise line charges for a group tour.

Timing Tips: Do Not Miss Your Ship

The golden rule is simple: be back at the port at least 1 hour before the published departure time. Ships will leave without you — it happens more often than you might think.

When you book a taxi with LP Taxi, your driver knows your ship's schedule and will make sure you are back in plenty of time. We build in a buffer so you never have to rush or worry.
