Elounda is one of the most beautiful corners of Crete — a small coastal town on the Gulf of Mirabello known for turquoise water, luxury resorts, and the famous island of Spinalonga just offshore. Getting there from Heraklion is easy, and a private taxi makes the journey comfortable, scenic, and flexible enough to include stops along the way.
Distance and Drive Time
Heraklion to Elounda is approximately 75 km. The drive takes around 70 minutes by taxi, following the national road east through Agios Nikolaos and then dropping down to the coast. The road is well-maintained the entire way, with the first half on the E75 highway and the second half on a scenic two-lane road that hugs the coastline above Mirabello Bay.
If you are coming from Heraklion Airport, add about 5 minutes. The airport is on the eastern edge of the city, so you are already heading in the right direction.
The Route: What You Will See
The drive east from Heraklion starts on the fast national road that runs along the northern coast. You will pass the resort areas of Hersonissos and Malia before the landscape opens up into rolling hills covered with olive groves and wild herbs. After about 50 minutes, you reach Agios Nikolaos — a charming lakeside town that is worth a stop on the way.
From Agios Nikolaos, the road to Elounda winds along the coast with views of the deep blue Mirabello Bay. On a clear day, you can see Spinalonga island from the road before you even arrive in town. The last 10 minutes of the drive are some of the most scenic on the island.
A Stop in Agios Nikolaos
Agios Nikolaos sits roughly two-thirds of the way to Elounda and makes an excellent stop. The town is built around a small lake — Lake Voulismeni — connected to the sea by a narrow channel. Cafes and restaurants line the waterfront, and the atmosphere is relaxed and genuinely Greek. You can stretch your legs, have a coffee, and take some photos in about 30 minutes before continuing to Elounda.
If you are making a full day trip, consider spending the morning at Spinalonga and the afternoon strolling through Agios Nikolaos on the way back.
What Elounda Is Like
Elounda is small and quiet compared to the resort towns on the north coast. It has a pretty harbor, a handful of waterfront tavernas serving excellent seafood, and crystal-clear water that you can swim in right from the village. Several of Crete's most famous luxury hotels are located here, but the village itself is unpretentious and welcoming.
The main attraction for day visitors is the boat trip to Spinalonga island, which departs from Elounda harbor every 30 minutes during the tourist season.
Spinalonga Island: History and Boat Trip
Spinalonga is a small fortified island and one of Crete's most important archaeological sites, just off the coast of Elounda. It was built as a Venetian fortress in the 16th century, later used by the Ottomans, and most famously served as a leper colony from 1903 to 1957 — one of the last active leper colonies in Europe.
Today the island is an open-air museum. You can walk through the narrow streets, see the houses where patients lived, visit the small church, and explore the massive Venetian walls. The atmosphere is hauntingly beautiful, and the views back to the Cretan mainland are stunning.
Boat schedule: Boats depart from Elounda harbor approximately every 30 minutes from 9:00 AM to 4:30 PM (April through October). The crossing takes about 15 minutes.
Time on the island: Most visitors spend 1 to 1.5 hours exploring Spinalonga. There is a marked walking path that covers all the main sights.
Tickets: Boat tickets cost around 10 to 12 euros. There is an additional 8 euro entry fee for the island itself.
If you have read Victoria Hislop's novel The Island, this is where it all takes place. The book brought international attention to Spinalonga's story, and you will see copies for sale in every bookshop in the area.
Boats From Plaka: A Quieter Alternative
The small village of Plaka, about 5 km north of Elounda, also offers boat trips to Spinalonga. The crossing from Plaka is even shorter — just 7 minutes — and the village is much quieter than Elounda. If you prefer a less crowded experience, ask your driver to take you to Plaka instead.
Taxi vs Bus: Getting to Elounda
KTEL public buses run from Heraklion to Agios Nikolaos regularly, but the connection from Agios Nikolaos to Elounda requires a second bus and adds waiting time. The total journey by bus can take over 2 hours each way, which eats into your time at the destination.
A private taxi does the trip in about 70 minutes door to door, with no transfers and no schedules to work around. You can stop in Agios Nikolaos on the way, leave whenever you want, and your driver can wait while you visit Spinalonga — so the car is there when you return from the island.
